City Public Works crews push loose snow and built up ice to the side of roads. This will not always create bare pavement but does provide an even surface on which to drive.
The most heavily traveled roads are given priority by snow plow operators. Priority roads include those around medical clinics, schools, main arterials, collector roads and roads on hills.
All roads will be plowed as quickly as possible. Priority roads will be plowed continuously until snow fall stops and sanding is done. Then, other streets (residential and dead-end) will be plowed.
Roads are sanded after the heaviest snow fall ceases and snow plowing has been accomplished. Sanding occurs at intersections and on steep slopes. Other areas that are shaded and have ice built up will also be treated as needed.
Streets are not otherwise sanded and drivers should follow safe driving techniques when driving on snow and ice.
Generally, snow plowing starts when four or more inches of snow accumulate on streets, when continuing snowfall is projected, or when unsafe conditions exist.
