Bicycle Division
Experience in the Bicycle Patrol field has proven to be an effective link between foot and car patrol units. The Bicycle Patrol Officer has shown a greater ability to patrol areas that the officer in a car cannot get to, and has shown that the bicycle is faster than an officer on foot, often arriving at the scene first. Because of the Bicycle Unit Patrol’s ability to cut through alleyways, descend and ascend stairways, jump curbs, use the sidewalk, travel the opposite direction on one-way streets, ride through parks and slip through bumper-to-bumpertraffic, the Bicycle Patrol Unit is easily the most mobile unit of the Department. The mission of the Bicycle Division: The mission of the Bicycle Patrol Unit is to act as a modified patrol unit and as a support unit for line officers by providing protection and/or backup for line officers when possible and practical. Generally, a Bike Team will beapplied as a sophisticated tool to enhance the capabilities of the patrol units. The Bicycle Patrol Unit will be most useful during the warmer summer months and especially at special events.
