BUILDING DEPARTMENT

General Information:

The role of the Building Department is to protect human life, health and property through the enforcement of Washington State Building and related codes. The building code provisions require that buildings and other structures be constructed, altered and used in a manner that protects a building's occupants as well as the general public.

Building Permit Applications:

Building Permit information and links to application forms may be found on our Building Permitting page.

Building Process:

The following steps are required to help ensure this minimum level of protection is provided for within the City of Bonney Lake.

  1. Permit applications for building construction, alterations and mechanical equipment work are available by going to the Building Permitting page and are to be submitted to the City of Bonney Lake Permit Coordinator at the City Hall Annex (8720 Main St E). The City of Bonney Lake Permit Center accepts applications between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

  1. Applicable City departments review the permit application, with its accompanying plans and submittal documents. The plan review staff for each department determines if the proposed construction will meet their area of responsibility of the Bonney Lake Municipal Code and State Laws. Corrections or clarification may be required to the application documents.  After all departments have approved the application, then the Permit Coordinator will issue the building permits.

  1. After the permit is issued, construction may begin. A prescribed schedule of inspections must occur throughout the construction process. The required inspections ensure that the work proceeds according to approved plans and permitted work. Inspections may be scheduled using the automated Inspection Request line.

  1. When the construction is completed, a final building inspection is required prior to occupancy of any building or space. A Building Department Inspector will conduct the final inspection. The Inspector will confirm that effected City, County and State department or agencies have approved and signed-off on their requirements. Lastly, the inspector will determine that the required life, health and property protections are provided for the occupancy or use. A Certificate of Occupancy will then be issued. Please note that the City of Bonney Lake does not issue temporary Certificate of Occupancy.

The City of Bonney Lake is required by the State Building Code Act to enforce the Washington State Building Code, which is an amended version of the 2006 International Building Codes. The State Building Code Council maintains a web site which includes access to the State Building Code (WAC 51.40).  Related Building Code information is also on the web from the International Code Council.
